On measuring "change" in terms

This bar chart shows something called the rank-turbulence divergence for different terms. When we say a word "changed" we mean its rank in the frequency distribution has shifted significantly. So if a term's frequency across all of Wikipedia was ranked 500, and then it jumped to 100, that would be a significant change. In contrast, common terms such as "the" or "was" will consistently appear at high ranks.
